Credit cards and business

October 20th, 2008

For the first time in history, cash is being threatened as the most frequently used medium of transaction. The proliferation of credit and debit cards and the ubiquity of vendors who accept them make carrying hard currency practically unnecessary, if not irrelevant, in this age of digitization.

Yet accepting credit cards comes at a cost. While consumers receive the convenience of paying with cards and vendors receive the ability to offer a convenience to customers, this convenience comes at a cost. Merchant accounts necessary to accept credit cards are often difficult to set up and often expensive to maintain. In addition to monthly maintenance fees, there are fees for each transaction of up to 4% in some cases, in addition to a smaller flat flee on top of that. That means that the credit card processor is sharing a significant portion of merchants’ profits with them.

When establishing a new merchant account, it is therefore prudent to shop around for the best prices. Since almost all online transactions and most physical transactions over $20 are made with credit or debit cards, the amount of profits you keep from the credit card processing company could just be your end-of-year bonus.

Settle Bank Debt

October 20th, 2008

Though the recent Wall St bailout package has been frequently called a bonus package for Wall Street executives who mismanaged their companies’ risks, the new troubled asset repurchase program has in it provisions that will help employees of Wall St. and Main St. alike. The rising sensitivity to the plight of the middle class put in the spotlight by ongoing turmoil in the financial markets as well as the highly contested presidential campaign, has made it easier for individuals to settle their debts with credit card companies and banks for less than what they owe.

Now is the best time for customers with debt to consider consolidating it or renegotiating it with the help of a debt settlement company or credit counseling company. These companies work with you and your lenders to first reduce the amount of debt that you owe – usually achieved by renegotiating your interest – and then by letting you consolidate it into one, even lower-rate account. The end result is that you will owe less and be able to pay it off more quickly and more easily. That will allow you to focus on getting your finances back on track so that you can once again afford the things that you buy and save for your financial future, which – in this day – is all but certain.

Travel like an investment banker

October 20th, 2008

Nobody likes flying. Between lines at security, waiting at the gate, and checking baggage, time spent getting to and waiting for a flight often takes longer than the flight itself. You’re a busy executive. Your time is your shareholders’ money. Why are you flying commercial??

Jet charters are an absolute necessity if you value your obligation to devote your time to managing your company properly. Corporate et charters are certainly expensive, but consider the trade-off. Flying commercially, you will be have to leave the job early in case of long lines at check-in or at security; flying on a private jet charter, you will be able to leave just in time to make your flight, without the worry that the plane will leave with you in case you get delayed. Flying commercially, you will have to spend precious time waiting for your plane to board; flying on a chartered plane, your time won’t be wasted and you’ll get where you need to be. Flying on a commercial plane, you’ll sit in an uncomfortable seat on the runway, and risk being late to your important commitments; flying on a jet charter, you’ll get where you need to be, on time or early – the plane will take off just after the door closes – and in comfort, allowing you to work or rest during the trip so that you can be ready to face the challenges that undoubtedly await you when you land.

Health Before Wealth

Many people avoid taking natural vitamin supplements because they feel fine. With this logic, they feel that they do not need to take them. However, this attitude is flawed.

When we suddenly fall ill – sickness, old age, some diagnosed health problem – we scramble to find a supplement that will magically cure us. Unfortunately, much of this can be avoided if supplements are taken on a regular basis.

With tempting fast food and being on the run most waking hours of the day, nutritional deficiency is almost unavoidable. Daily nutrition remains important, but most people do not have the time to find that balance in their diet. However, natural vitamin supplements are not designed to replace a good diet – they are called “supplements” for a reason.

Vitamins can help boost our immune system and keep us from being in the situations described above. Your body also takes in a large amount of toxins on any given day. Supplements help fight that toxin intake and expel those that we do. Chemicals we come into contact with, our unhealthy lifestyles, and environmental stresses all around us are big factors in our toxin levels, and we need to fight back against them.

Choose the right supplement, and you can feel better, stay healthier, and complement your diet in a way your body will thank you for!

Free Legal Forms

October 7th, 2008

In today’s business world, you need to make sure you are properly covering situations that you may be involved in to protect yourself legally. Fortunately, there is a wide range of free legal forms at your disposal to make sure that you can run your business with peace of mind. Here are just a few:

  1. Tax forms. The most common of any business form, the government makes free tax forms readily available for you to fill out and send in. These forms can cover obtaining tax identification numbers for your business, filing your quarterly tax payments, and charging and paying sales tax on items that you sell.
  2. Business protection forms. The main form I speak of here is the limited liability company form, or LLC form. As an LLC, you maintain that should you be taken to court for anything, the plaintiff can only get what your business is worth and not your personal wealth. This protects you from potentially losing your life as opposed to bankrupting your business and having to start over.
  3. Any form involving your business and an outside entity. These could be legal contracts with other businesses, or partnerships and incorporating your business. When more than one person is involved, legal lines need to be drawn. The government makes it easy to find the correct free legal forms for this situation as well.

Bank on good ads

Lots of businesses like to cut costs by doing everything in house. But this strategy only helps some businesses – mainly large businesses that are able to afford building the kind of professional infrastructure they need to run all aspects of their business in-house. Is your business that big? In reality, few businesses can afford the kind of personnel and equipment necessary to compete with the big boys on the small screen. That’s why is your looking to make a splash on television, either with your own TV show or with a commercial, your best bet is to employ the help of experts: people who have the equipment, the experience, and the know-how to translate your vision to television.

A lot of people wonder why they should hire a television production company until they try to produce their own TV shows or commercials. After all, the only things that you need for a good commercial is a Mac, a couple actors, a bright light, and a camera, right? Wrong. If you’ve ever winced at a commercial, chances are it was the brainchild of a miserly business owner who thought she could do just as well for a whole lot less – and look where that got her. Even if you would hire a professional editor and director, without the full package of personnel and equipment that a TV production company can give you, chances are you’ll either pay way more and have much bigger headache, or else that your video will end up being total crap.

Televisions production companies also have your best interests in mind when they produce TV spots for you. All growth from advertising requires sustained advertising to keep it going; this is a business truism. So a reputable producer will also want to shoot your commercial at a cost that makes it worthwhile for you to use them, lest you choose someone else or try shooting in-house for your next commercial effort.

So if you ever get an itch to buy a corporate camcorder; if you are employing your child to help you come up with a catchy ditty for your company’s brand; if you are ever tempted to purchase yourself a directors’ chair with your name embroidered on the back – don’t do it. Call professionals to take care of what is arguably one of the biggest logistical nightmares that is part of every marketing program; you’ll be happy you did, and TV viewers will thank you for not subjecting them to another one of those painfully sleazy commercials - money in the bank!

Lethal weapon

September 5th, 2008

Do you ever feel like you’re physically vulnerable, but have no way to strengthen yourself? Lots of people are in a situation just like yours, especially if you’re a woman; no matter how strong you get, you’re seemingly defenseless against someone who might want to rob you or worse. Many people who feel defenseless turn to pepper spray, knives, or guns to give themselves a feeling of security. But the truth is, weapons are often impractical for use (are you going to reach for a gun when you’re being held up at gunpoint?) and are otherwise extremely dangerous. There are countless accidents involving non-lethal defenses like pepper spray each and every year, not to mention thousands of accidental gun deaths. Wouldn’t it be great if you could defend yourself without the use of the weapon?

With a commitment to martial arts training you can and will become your own best weapon, capable of stopping someone - no matter their size. You’ll be able to disarm an attacker, neutralize a thief, and hold your own in hand to hand combat if need be. All it takes is a little bit of commitment, a willingness to sweat, and the desire to feel more confident and more fit for you to lose your worries about your physical vulnerability.

Fortunately, there is a Dallas tae kwon do school for every schedule, every age, and every budget; schools where you’ll learn how to defend yourself, improve your physical fitness, and improve your overall sense of well-being as your confidence soars.

But Tae Kwon Do instruction isn’t just for adults: a good martial arts academy will be able to motivate children to take part in a commitment to learning a martial art like karate or tae kwon do that will only enrich their lives. A commitment to attend to class and practice tae kwon do skills will naturally transform into a strong sense of self-discipline and responsibility. What’s more, the actual skills learned are sure to make your child – male or female – more confident both physically and mentally as their physical and mental toughness improve along with their fitness. And fitness they will acquire, as tae kwon do classes are arduous, testing strength, endurance, and mental toughness, as instructors demand that students give their all in pursuit of their goals – all while they have a good time learning a new sport, a new skill, and a new way of life.

Guitar Re-String Tutorial for Beginners

August 27th, 2008

I was at the music store the other day sitting in on a lesson being given to a fairly new player, a young man about 17 0r 18 years old. He picked up his Paul Red Smith guitar and the lesson started. Immediately, his high E string came loose from the tuning peg. He was embarrased of course, so Richard the teacher let him use a guitar of his for the lesson.

classical-restring-at-bridge.jpg

I was curious and I was surprised, this guitar had just had new strings put on it by the young man, and simply put, it was obvious he had no clue on how to do this. Basically he had stuck the string through the holes in the tuning posts and made a 90 degree bend in the string end without winding the strings around the post 3 to 4 times and started to tune it and play.

I went and bought him a string for $1.50 and showed him how to install it properly using a “luthiers knot”. For the most part he needed to start with a new set of strings. We are not born with the ability to restring a guitar, not that it is rocket science, but it can be challenging to a person who only has a guitar for beginners knowledge base. It seems to me that it is a matter of pride too. Obviously we have to learn that, and maybe the teacher should show you that.

It does not take many times to learn how, you need a simple book with pictures and adequate directions. This is relative to your guitar type, there are many ways and systems in use at this time. Definitely start with the type of set up your guitar has. If you change your strings regularly, in no time you will be the expert.

Basic tools needed to re-string a Fender Stratocaster and most guitars ever made:

1. One set of stings, if you don’t know what type of string to buy, ask your teacher. That is a great starting point, although as you mature, you may have a preference of your own.
2. String winding tool, preferably with a wire cutter built in.
3. Wire cutter (if your winder does not have one).
4. Reading glasses, optional.
5. Device to tune the guitar up.

Get a set of strings, and make the investment in the tolls needed for a restring. If you have wire cutters, than you don’t need the fancier winding tool. Essentially you will have less than $20.00 wrapped up in tools, and about six to eight dollars in strings.

Actually watching someone doing it or having a few good pictures is a key issue, this is where the term ” a picture is worth a thousand words” come from. Another situation that can crop up is that there is more than one way to string a guitar, and more importantly, different styles of guitars have different systems.

Don’t be overwhelmed, we will have some detailed pictures and instructions to show you for each specific model and method of restringing your guitar soon. Read and Enjoy.
